He received his B.A. in Modern History from the University of Oxford in 1963 and his D.Phil. in Sociology from the same institution in 1971. Mann is currently visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge.

In his book entitled: “The Sources of Social Power, Volume 1” Michael Mann identifies four specific elements of control.

“A general society, their structure and their history can be given in terms of interrelations of what I call the four sources of social power: ideological, economic, military and political.” Michael Mann, “The Sources of Social Power, Volume 1”, Page 2.

Michael Mann’s description of the societal structure of power becomes all the more relevant when one begins to consider the actions taken by globally aggressive nations throughout history. Starting with the dominance of Babylon, history reveals them to be economically dominant. A culture of prodigious wealth biblically described as the head of Gold in Daniel chapter 2. The other element of control existed in Babylon also, the military the political and the ideological or religious. ButAlexander James, author of The Hidden History of Money and Feudal Order Usury Secrets, Page 116describes Nimrod, the builder of the tower and City of Babel ancient origins of Babylon this way:

Nimrod was the first Priest-Banker; the first Mother of All Banks was founded in 45 A.D. as the "Bank" of Rome in Vatican City by Simon Magnus “the (Pharisaic) Sorcerer.” When he arrived in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius, that city was the USURY capital of the World. A few rich families controlled all the wealth, and just like the U.S. today, these super-rich monopoly capitalists owned and controlled the government. Alexander James, The Hidden History of Money and Feudal Order Usury Secrets, Page 116.

Each power that followed held sway over all four elements of control, but in each case one element stood out. Medo Persia was known for its crushing military savagery, Greece was known for its intellectual and philosophically persuasive impact that has lasted until today, Rome figured out a way to combine all the elements into a weapon of intimidation that was without description in Daniel 7. Rome, here as the fourth beast defies depiction. It should not be surprising therefore to discover that the United States, as the inheritor of the position of globally dominant power should express all four of these elements of control. This is why the book written by John Perkins entitled: “Confessions of an economic Hitman” is so very revealing today. John Perkins was born on January 28, 1945. In the opening pages of his book he says the following:

“Economic hit men (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. They funnel money from the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign "aid" organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets of a few wealthy families who control the planet’s natural resources. Their tools include fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. They play a game as old as empire, but one that has taken on new and terrifying dimensions during this time of globalization. I should know; I was an EHM."   John Perkins, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

The question then is, why did he write this book? What was he hoping to accomplish? Is his effort simply to further line his pockets, or to become famous? Books like his usually do the opposite. They might pay a little but the danger they present far out ways any gain that might be available. The work of an Economic Hitman carries with it the same danger that accompanies any other type of Hitman, expendability. We need not wonder, because John Perkins reveals his own motive.

“This story must be told. We live in a time of terrible crisis — and tremendous opportunity. The story of this particular economic hit man is the story of how we got to where we are and why we currently face crises that seem insurmountable. This story must be told because only by understanding our past mistakes will we be able to take advantage of future opportunities.” John Perkins, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

The voice of the dragon is heard. The echo of suffering resounds around the world. As the dragon swells in size and power, soon the deafening roar will be heard where now there is a pregnant silence.
