The Hand of Rome

The Adullam Films website describes itself this way. “Adullam Films was founded in 1999 by writer/director Chris Pinto for the purpose of chronicling through film & video production the chief evidence of our time that proves the word of God is true, and that Jesus Christ is coming soon.” On this website is found the following comment regarding a book originally written in the year 1888 by someone named Justin Dewey Fulton D. D.

“In 1888, a man named Justin D. Fulton gave a warning to the people of America through his book, Washington in the Lap of Rome.  In it, he details how the Roman Catholic Church flooded the new capital city just after the American Revolution, with the intention of seizing control of the United States by covert means.  By 1888, the situation was such that Fulton wrote: “Romanism is the dominant power in the Capitol of the United States.” In the 19th century, the author was convinced that if Americans did not awaken to the problem, it would be a matter of time before Jesuit priests would rule our country, and the Inquisition would come to American soil.” The Adullam Films website

On the Adullam Website, there is an advertisement for the 2012 edition of Washington in the Lap of Rome . Here is the rest of that comment.

“This 2012 edition of Fulton’s book also presents a seventy page forward by documentary filmmaker, Christian J. Pinto that attempts to answer whether or not there was any truth to Fulton’s warning.  Pinto reveals the influence of Rome from 1888 to the present time, documenting the role of the Vatican during World War II, with the development of the CIA, the Vietnam era, the Jesuit origins of Communism, McCarthyism, the Mexican border issue, the rewriting of American history, the Catholic-dominated Supreme Court, the manipulation of the White House, and even the modern presidency of Barack Obama.” The Adullam Films website

The original 1888 edition of Washington in the Lap of Rome opens this way in chapter 1 on page 11:

“ROMANISM is beginning to uncover its hand in America. It begins to be fearless, now that it is becoming natural. It is attempting to do here what it has achieved in Europe, to awe the state, control the people, and banish liberty. Slowly, stealthily, with the look of a saint outwardly, with the heart of a Jesuit inwardly, Romanism has accomplished in fact, if not in name, what she achieved in so many of the kingdoms of Europe, a union of Church and State.” Justin Dewey Fulton D. D. Washington in the Lap of Rome 1888 edition, page 11.

The first thing that struck me about this statement from Dr. Fulton in 1888, was the phrase “Slowly, stealthily” and how very similar it is to a quote found in the book, The Great Controversy by Ellen G. White on page 581, paragraph 1, also published in 1888!!

“God's Word has given warning of the impending danger; let this be unheeded, and the Protestant world will learn what the purposes of Rome really are, only when it is too late to escape the snare. She is silently growing into power. Her doctrines are exerting their influence in legislative halls, in the churches, and in the hearts of men. She is piling up her lofty and massive structures, in the secret recesses of which her former persecutions will be repeated. Stealthily and unsuspectedly she is strengthening her forces to further her own ends when the time shall come for her to strike. All that she desires is vantage-ground, and this is already being given her. We shall soon see and shall feel what the purpose of the Roman element is. Whoever shall believe and obey the Word of God will thereby incur reproach and persecution.” The Great Controversy by Ellen G. White, page 581, paragraph 1

For emphasis let me repeat what Dr. Fulton has said. “Slowly, stealthily, with the look of a saint outwardly, with the heart of a Jesuit inwardly, Romanism has accomplished… a union of Church and State.” Here the good Doctor has described the success of Rome regarding her stated objective. Fifteen years before the publication of his book, Dr. Fulton was installed as Pastor of the Hanson Place Baptist Church on June 2, 1873, according to the New York Times. On that day, the church was packed. The difficulty in finding Dr. Fulton’s book today is truly an indication of how things have changed since 1888.

This is certainly not the time to be asleep.
